5 ways to get to know yourself better

Getting to know yourself as you get older can be a tough but necessary process. But when you decide to learn who you truly are, its important to know how you can approach this reflective time in your life. 

Not knowing who we are can come in the form of a quarter-life crisis. According to the Guardian, about 86% of millennials experience a quarter-life crisis. Many millennials report having experienced periods of loneliness, depression, and insecurity. It's during these times of soul searching that you really have to do the work to figure out who you really are and what your place in the world is. 

Here are five ways you can get to know yourself better and avoid a quarter-life crisis:

Journaling. Writing in a journal can be a great way to express yourself in a safe space. Whether you are recounting moments in your life or jotting down some affirmations to keep positive, keeping a journal is a therapeutic way to get to know yourself better. Keeping a record of what experiences make you feel good and bad can be a good system for analyzing your moods and thoughts.

Meditate. Another good way to get to know yourself is to practice self-care through meditation. When you meditate, you're putting everything out of your mind for moments of peace and silence.

Exercise. Blowing off steam and approaching your problems in a calm manner. Whether it be yoga, Pilates or even kick-boxing, exercise gives you time to think and reflect on your day. So if you are going through a time of disappointment, getting active can help to clear your mind for better choices and help you figure out what you want in life. 

Travel alone. Solo travel is big now but if not to meet people, then definitely to get away from it all. Treating yourself to a solo trip might be just what you need to figure your life plans out and take evaluation of your current situation. You'll also get to know yourself better by having to make every decision alone and be completely emotionally independent. 

Talk it out. Talking to yourself to figure out who you are and what you want out of your life isn't a bad idea. You can also go to therapy to work through any issues with a licensed professional. Feeling like you aren't close to yourself or going through a quarter-life crisis are completely normal and its always best to seek professional help when it comes to your mental health and happiness.
