GSL: Week in Review

The folks over at Scandal have whetted our overzealous appetites with a few sneak peek promo shots and videos of the much anticipated return of our favorite TV drama. Imani Hakim, of Everybody Hates Chris fame, made some news this week when it was announced that she'd be starring as our favorite 2012 Olympic gymnast in the 2014 Lifetime biopic "The Gabby Douglas Story." The film will chronicle Gabby's gymnastic history as well as the struggles she faced being away from her family while training to be on the Olympic team. Need another reason to look forward to the film? Regina King has signed on to play Gabby's single mom, Natalie Hawkins. Read more about it here.

20130920-121010.jpg Nina Davuluri made history this past weekend when she became the first ever Indian-American woman to win the Miss America beauty pageant. The now former Miss New York and University of Michigan graduate's win did not come without some controversy, however. Many racist attacks about her heritage came about on social media sites such as Twitter, many of them referring to her as an Arab and a terrorist. Sad! Read more here.


Thanks to brave journalism in the University of Alabama's student newspaper, The Crimson White, word about there being racial segregation within some sororities on campus came out, leading to an impressive march involving several hundred students. The march proved to be successful when the university's first female president sent out a video statement acknowledging the racism and calling for a more diverse sorority recruitment system.
