Keita's hair directly reflects her personality. It has the equal part charm and equal part sass. Take a moment to enjoy it...

GSL: You have a gorgeous head of natural hair! What do you love most about it? KHW: I love how absolutely freeing my natural hair has been for me.

GSL: Why don't you tell us a little bit about your hair journey? KHW: I actually have a great hair horror story! I had my first relaxer when I was 6 years old. From the time I had baby teeth until I was twenty, I had long thick relaxed hair. In college, my friends and I thought we were doing the economical thing playing beauty shop in our dorm rooms. I had a terrible dorm room dye job circa 1999, followed by an ill-advised relaxer a few weeks later. While rinsing out the relaxer, my hair came out in clumps. I remember crying in the shower with big chunks of hair in both hands. Needless to say, I made a decision to give up relaxing and I haven’t looked back since. I was so young when I got my first relaxer; I had no idea how my natural hair was going to look. I didn't really remember it any way other than straight. The transition was not an easy one… My hair was quite rebellious. I was certainly surprised with my curl pattern.

GSL: So now what's your relationship like with your hair? KHW: My hair is like an old friend that I love in spite of her quirkiness and occasional uncooperativeness. My hair and I have evolved and grown through various stages of my life. I look at old pictures and I can tell the entire back story based on my hairstyle.

GSL: What's your hair care regimen & maintenance like?

KHW: I’m a fan of the no 'poo movement. I tend to only wash my hair when it is really dirty or if I have gone swimming. Otherwise, I rinse it with conditioner. I only ever comb my hair when it is both wet and saturated with conditioner. I use a leave-in conditioner and a humidity resistant gel. I may (depending on how much time I have in the morning) blow dry with a diffuser until my hair is damp and let it air dry the rest of the way.

GSL: Since you're very big on conditioning and moisturizing your hair, what's one product you absolutely cannot live without? KHW: I cannot live without my Jane Carter Solution Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner!

GSL: Do you like it when people touch your hair? KHW: Too much hands-on action makes my hair frizzy, so I dislike it when people touch my hair without asking first.

GSL: What was the inspiration for your current hairstyle? KHW: Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

GSL: Fierce! Any parting words of natural hair wisdom for GSL readers? KHW: The best way to care for your hair is to take care of your overall health. Drinking lots of water and eating right makes a world of difference in the strength and shininess of your hair.
