The Difference Between Confidence and Arrogance

I hope you’re all smashing goals and flipping that hair while you do it. Before we get into this topic of confidence, I want to say, never apologize for being great. But always stay humble in your demeanor and approach to things.

With that being said, what is the real difference between confidence and cockiness? Well, first what I did was look up the definition of confidence.

[Kon-fi-duh ns]

  1. Full trust; belief in the powers, trustworthiness, or reliability of a person or thing.

  2. Belief in oneself and one’s powers and abilities

Now when you think about it. There is a very fine line but a far reach in the definition.

  1. Arrogant; pertly self-assertive; conceited.

Now do you see the difference? The real difference is the demeanor. To carry yourself with confidence does not make you cocky. Now, when you build a rapport of cockiness because you carry yourself in a way that you are self made then you are nowhere near confidence but arrogant. When I studied the definition of these two words, I wanted to check myself. How do you know if you’re confident or cocky?

  1. How you interact with people - How you involve yourself with people is very important when it comes to how people perceive you. If you are a leader, you are never cocky but always confident and you are not confident in just yourself or your abilities but your team.

  2. Your attitude - To determine your demeanor, your attitude plays a huge part. Most confident people are very humble and gracious. They are sure of their thoughts, feelings, and focus. Arrogant people are focused on who sees them, how others praise them or “hate” on them. It’s all about the cocky person, not the genuine person.

  3. Your conversation - As I mentioned before, A cocky person will make matters all about them. What they do, how they do it, and one thing they will never do is teach you. Therefore, with arrogance, they are not a leader.

  4. Your Motivation and Faith - Arrogant people believe in themselves as if they are the creator of the universe. Confident people understand that their help and assistance comes from a higher power.

It’s important to discern these attributes early in life or in relationships. Most of the time people are attracted to confident people who turn out to be cocky. It’s quite obvious that cocky people are confident but it comes from a different place than confidence would come from a humble person. It’s all a matter of the heart.

So think about your attitude and those are you. Some people will verbally say they are humble but convey a different message with their body language, their conversation, or demeanor. Always watch and listen. Always pay attention.
