It's awards season in Hollywood again, and all of us here at GlamSavvy have got our eyes on Kenyan goddess/actress Lupita Nyong'o. She's already stunned the world in a red Ralph Lauren caped dress at the Golden Globes. She caught our attention when news of her soul shattering role in 2013's 12 Years A Slave made its rounds in the endless positive reviews it's garnered. In the highly acclaimed film, she plays Patsey, the tragic object of affection to Michael Fassbender's brilliantly cruel Master Epps. After being snubbed at the Golden Globes on Sunday, she was nominated for an Academy Award and won the Critics Choice Award.
Lupita was born in Mexico while her parents were in political exile from their home in Kenya. She grew up in Kenya when they had the opportunity to return safely, then she came to the US for undergraduate school at Hampshire College in Massachusetts. Her first big break came when she was chosen to play a role in an MTV-produced television show based in Kenya, which aired to help educate the younger Kenyan community about AIDs.
As many of us have gotten the opportunity to realize during her promotional appearances for 12 Years A Slave, Lupita is extremely well-versed and not afraid to share her opinion when it comes to having the spotlight placed directly on her. When asked about her future in acting, she told DuJour magazine, "I would love to have a career that's governed by the material; I always want to be part of stories that I feel are worthwhile. I do my best work when I feel conviction to say something through the character I play. Always I want to have integrity and not compromise that."
Her sudden rise to fame has also given her a chance to share with us her amazing sense of fashion. She dresses for her stature, but she's not shy about incorporating bright splashes of color into her wardrobe, either. Not only has she been slaying all of her red carpet and party looks, she's now one of three actresses campaigning for Miu Miu's Spring 2014 collection.
With 12 Years A Slave only being her very first role right after graduating from Yale School of Drama in 2012, we're all extremely excited to see what's next for this stylish force to be reckoned with.
